Mayor Gabriel J. Campana doesn't want a 2010 city budget with a tax increase.
His 2009 budget proposal was handed back to him a year ago by council and changed to include a 1-mill real estate tax increase, but a message from the mayor Friday indicates he will try to prevent that from happening a second time.
In e-mail message, Campana reported that the "final numbers (were still) being tabulated," but made clear he doesn't want another tax increase.

Tax take from the automobile industry has surged in the first 10 months this year as auto production and sales were booming in the world's largest market.
The State Administration of Taxation said Friday value added tax (VAT) paid by the transportation equipment manufacturing industry grew 28.8 percent to 88.6 billion yuan ($13 billion) during the period, and business income tax revenue was 30.7 billion yuan, up 29.6 percent.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) asked on Saturday candidates in next year's national and local elections to start registering as tax withholding agents as the period for filing of certificates of candidacies (CoCs) with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has begun.

Alcohol prices could rise by ten per cent next year because of tax increases, the head of a major brewer has said.
Stuart MacFarlane from AB InBev UK, which owns brands including Beck's, Stella and Budweiser, told The Grocer the majority of price rises in 2010 would come from "Government meddling".
From January, VAT will go up by 2.5 per cent and in April alcohol duty will go up by two per cent.

The property tax rate will go up this year due to a drop in the town's property valuation, Assistant Assessor Jean Berthold told selectmen last night.
This year, the tax rate will jump to $12.47 from $11.66 per $1,000 of assessed value, she said.
Last year, the owner of a home valued at $350,000 would have paid $4,081 in property taxes.
